REPORTS, TESTS AND OPEN EVENINGS

Parents receive targets for their children at the beginning of each term. These are then assessed at the end of the term and a report on progress is given. Assessment is by teacher assessment but may be supported by testing the children.

Statutory tests take place in early May/June. These are the end of Key Stage 2 tests for our Year 6 children.  The tests are Standard Assessment Tests (SATs) and are in use throughout the country.

In addition, children in Years 3, 4 and 5 are tested by the use of non-statutory assessment tests as well as reading and spelling tests. The non statutory tests normally occur in late May or early June.

You will be given the opportunity to visit the school to discuss your child’s progress early in the school year and both during the spring and summer terms.  It is a valuable exercise for both you and your child’s teacher and we would strongly encourage you to attend.  Your attitude towards your child’s education will have a considerable effect on her/his progress.

HOMEWORK

We encourage and expect the children to participate in Homework activities set by their class teachers.

Children are often asked to find extra support materials at home for topics that they are working on. We also ask that parents support their children by way of discussions about topics and on story writing topics.

Each child in the school will have a School Diary, in which they plan out their homework on a weekly basis and any other relevant information. The school diary is an invaluable method of home school contact on many issues and should be in school every day.

Children who have difficulties producing homework may be asked to attend a lunchtime homework club taken by a classroom assistant.

BUDDIES

In Rice Lane, we choose five children from each year group who have shown an interest in becoming a Buddy. These children then take part in a training day in our school hall.

The role of a buddy involves:

·         Checking the Buddy Bench to see if there are children who have not got anyone to play with and then include them in activities and games

·         Setting up games for classes when they are playing with Buddy equipment

·         Monitoring the Buddy area, to check children are playing safely and using equipment sensibly

·         Giving feedback to the Buddy Co-ordinator
